Plastics Eco-Friendly Transformation into Renewable Aromatics (PETRA)

EU Innovation Fund – key assumptions

  • Where: PETRA plant will be located at Heveskes industrial area of Delfzijl, Netherlands.
  • Emissions: Based on the current project scope, the plant is expected to avoid nearly 517,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent over its first ten years of operation. This is a 72% reduction compared with fossil-based aromatics production and incineration, calculated according to the Innovation Fund methodology.
  • Funding: Up to EUR 20.8 million from the EU Innovation Fund.
  • Status: BioBTX has reached its positive Final Investment Decision in July 2026.

At PETRA, our first-of-a-kind demonstration plant, we will turn up to 22,400 tonnes of mixed plastic waste per year into renewable benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX), the building blocks for everyday products such as plastics, coatings and textiles.

Funding

The PETRA industrial plant was selected to receive up to EUR 20.8 million in funding under the IF24 Net-Zero Technologies mid-scale call. It is one of the first-of-a-kind plants to be selected by the EU Innovation Fund.

About the EU Innovation Fund

The Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the demonstration and commercialisation of innovative low-carbon technologies. It is financed by revenues from the auctioning of allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and is managed by CINEA on behalf of the European Commission.
